Frequently asked questions - Question 30
30. How do I transfer a .au domain to Marlin?

NOTE: Please read about Marlin's general transfer guidelines here.

The transfer of a .au domain name typically takes 2 days from the time that the domain Administrative Contact authorises the domain transfer. Domain transfers follow the procedures outlined in auDA's Transfers policy (change of registrar) as follows:

Transfers (Change of Registrar of Record) Policy (2003-03)
    Policy No: 2003-03
    Publication Date: 14/03/2003
    Status: Current

  • How do I submit the .au transfer?
Domain transfer orders are submitted via the Marlin transfer tool, which can be accessed by clicking the Transfer Domain link at the top of the screen, or click here. You can submit a transfer at any time during the Domain life cycle expect when the domain is in status "Pending Delete". You will be required to enter an Authorization Key. For more information on Authorization Key's, or for assistance finding your Authorization Key, click here.
  • What does the .au transfer process involve?
First the domain Registrant Contact email address is retrieved from the whois record at the registry, and a "request for authorisation of transfer" email is subsequently sent to the domain registrant contact. The transfer authorisation email contains instructions for approving the transfer of the domain to Marlin, and you must respond to this email and accept the transfer authorisation.
Upon receipt of the acceptance of the transfer from the registrant contact, Marlin notifies the .au Registry of the pending transfer, and the status of your domain will then change to "PENDINGTRANSFER". The domain will be in "PENDINGTRANSFER" status for 2-days, after which time the domain will be transferred to Domain Central management by the Registry. During the transfer process the domain remains active and all DNS services continue to resolve, however you cannot make any changes to the domain records during the "Pending Transfer" status period.  When the domain name transfers completes you can manage the domain using the Marlin account management login.

NOTE: Your credit card will be billed at the time the domain transfer is submitted. If the domain transfer does not successfully complete or it is cancelled at your request, we will refund the credit card.

Protect your web presence
Have you considered registering your .com, .com.au, .net.au, .co.nz variants of your domain? The deciding factor usually depends on how serious you are about Protecting Your Online Value. Ask yourself whether it would disturb you if a competitor registered these domains? Our easy to use and reliable Web and Email Forwarding services allow you to point as many domains as you want to your website.

Web with benefits:
Another benefit of registering multiple domains is the greater probability of being located on Search Engine listings. An interesting fact is that many Search Engines now feature region specific searches. You can perform a generic search, or you can select the 'Search Australia Only' option.

How the search works is simple; an 'Australian Only' search may prioritise addresses that end in '.au'; a 'New Zealand Only' search may prioritise addresses that end in '.nz'. To guarantee your website is listed and accessed by both regions you will need to have both domain names registered.

In contrast to the above, neither the '.au' nor the '.nz' domains will stand a chance of competing against the '.com', or rather the TLD name space, if someone submits a generic search with no regions specified.

If you currently conduct business in other countries, or one day plan to expand then we recommend securing your country specific domains now.
