Frequently asked questions - Question 19
19. How can I change the legal owner of my .au domain?

This can be done, however only under certain circumstances. Please refer to auDA policy.

The simple form of that stated in the above link is as follows:

  1. If we're not the registrar of record of your domain, you will first need to transfer to us (see 'How do I transfer a domain to Domain Central?')

  2. If we are the registrar of record, please complete the Change of Registrant kit. (If this link does not work in your browser you can navigate directly to  http://www.domaincentral.com.au/pdf/). This kit includes the following:
    1. Written notification from an authorised representative for the current registrant, that clearly states who the domain should be transferred to, and the reason for transfer.
    2. Written notification from the gaining registrant stating that they accept the domain name for the above mentioned reason, and that they are happy to enter into a service agreement with Domain Central, and that all terms and conditions are agreed to. Our service agreement may be viewed at www.domaincentral.com.au/service/.

    Circumstances for transfer

    A registrant may transfer their domain name licence to a proposed new registrant if:
    1. the domain name is used within the operations of the registrant and either the registrant or the operations are acquired by, merged into, devolved to or joined with the operations of the proposed new registrant; or
    2. the registrant, being a legal entity, is dissolved, liquidated, enters into administration or is wound up with the consequence of the registrant's licence passing to the proposed new registrant by operation of law;
    3. the registrant, being a natural person, dies, becomes insane or enters into a deed of family settlement with consequence of the registrant's licence passing to the proposed new registrant by operation of law; or
    4. the registrant is required to relinquish the licence to the proposed new registrant by order of a competent arbitrator, tribunal, court or legislative body; or
    5. the registrant has entered into an agreement to transfer the licence to the proposed new registrant in settlement of a dispute between the parties, as evidenced by a deed of settlement;

  3. What fees are payble to Domain Central for the above service? The fees are outlined in the Change of Registrant kit. For information regarding the change of ownership for a domain other than a .au domain click here.

  4. How do I fax the Change of Registrant kit to you? Our fax number is (03) 8080 1623.

Protect your web presence
Have you considered registering your .com, .com.au, .net.au, .co.nz variants of your domain? The deciding factor usually depends on how serious you are about Protecting Your Online Value. Ask yourself whether it would disturb you if a competitor registered these domains? Our easy to use and reliable Web and Email Forwarding services allow you to point as many domains as you want to your website.

Web with benefits:
Another benefit of registering multiple domains is the greater probability of being located on Search Engine listings. An interesting fact is that many Search Engines now feature region specific searches. You can perform a generic search, or you can select the 'Search Australia Only' option.

How the search works is simple; an 'Australian Only' search may prioritise addresses that end in '.au'; a 'New Zealand Only' search may prioritise addresses that end in '.nz'. To guarantee your website is listed and accessed by both regions you will need to have both domain names registered.

In contrast to the above, neither the '.au' nor the '.nz' domains will stand a chance of competing against the '.com', or rather the TLD name space, if someone submits a generic search with no regions specified.

If you currently conduct business in other countries, or one day plan to expand then we recommend securing your country specific domains now.
